Yet, we're here for a few decades at most, and we are in whatever comes next forever (as far as we know.)

I'm not a recon, but I am a strongly Hellenic-leaning polytheist, and I've noticed that most of what we know about the afterlife beliefs of the ancients seems to be parallel to Judaism during the time when it was believed that everyone, good or bad, ended up in Sheol. You have to wonder how those beliefs would have evolved had conversion not interrupted the natural development.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10825413739290142361noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2382184804747180588.post-40062817903776337752013-09-21T04:13:36.153-07:002013-09-21T04:13:36.153-07:00@Michael H: I think having a 'bleak' outlo...@Michael H: I think having a 'bleak' outlook on the Afterlife helps you focus on the life you are currently leading, and helps you get the most out of that, instead of witholding all pleasures until you get to the Afterlife. You may be right, though, that a happy afterlife added to the success of Christianity. Unless you ended up in Hell, of course.Elani Temperancehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05611003885755154591noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2382184804747180588.post-39831331632552192252013-09-20T05:39:55.132-07:002013-09-20T05:39:55.132-07:00One wonders why one would choose a religion with s...One wonders why one would choose a religion with such a bleak outlook for eternity. If this is truly the fate of most of us, why not turn Christian, which offers a much brighter heaven? Maybe this is partly why Christianity succeeded so well.

But it may also be that the mythology shouldn't be taken too literally. I think the ancients, having no actual knowledge of the afterworld, imagined it to be dull and shadowy -- the Hellens had Hades, the Scandinavians Hel, the Jews Sheol -- because all they could know for sure was that it was something other than earthly life.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10825413739290142361noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2382184804747180588.post-21707427040816678292012-10-19T15:11:33.451-07:002012-10-19T15:11:33.451-07:00I am so very sorry to hear about your friend's...I am so very sorry to hear about your friend's passing.
