I find it very likely that she, like other scientists and philosophers, was an atheist or an agnostic. She was intelligent and eloquent, and she was a feminist. She definitely didn't like the idea of women spending their lives barefoot, pregnant and illiterate. In short, she was an incarnation of everything against which early Christians stood. (Now, from the safe distance of time, they are too often idealized.)
