Every month, Hellenion members pour a libation to a different Hellenic God or Goddess. I'm not a member of Hellenion, but I did partake in this practice for one Hellenic year. Every month, I would make the libation to the God honoured that month and create a mix-tape, a wonderful idea I gratefully stole off of Sannion. This is an overview of those mix-tape and any subsequent ones I have done.
I would like to dust off this series, but I don't know which of the Theoi to make a mix-tape for! So, if you would like to request one, please feel free. Who do you feel close to who is not yet on the list? Who would you like me to choose music for? Feel free to leave a comment or send me an e-mail.
Every month, Hellenion members pour a libation to a different Hellenic God or Goddess. While I did not continue this practice into the new Hellenic year, I did do it for a year before that. To make the day more special, I created mix-tapes of songs which either described or would speak to the deity in question. With just twelve months and Dionysos in place of Hestia, Hestia never got a mix-tape. One of this blog's faithful readers and all-round wonderful person, Jacen, contacted me yesterday. He had found my mix-tape series and was wondering if there were any songs that reminded me of Hestia, a Goddess he has built much kharis with. Instead of answering him, I'm doing this mix-tape, because I have always felt She did deserve one. If there is another Theos you would like to have a mix-tape of, let me know?

Hestia is the virgin Goddess of the hearth and presided over both the hearth of the city as well as every home in it. She presides over the cooking of bread and the preparation of the family meal. she is the Goddess of the sacrificial flame and every sacrifice starts and ends with a sacrifice to Her. The cooking of the communal feast of sacrificial meat was naturally a part of her domain. Hestia is a very female-oriented Goddess. Caring for the household was a task solely intended for women and it is because of this, very few stories about Hestia were made or recorded; the male-dominated culture cared little for Her. Yet, it was also the male head of household who travelled to the city fire for a new flame when his home fire burned out; the Gods have great respect for Her, and so should mankind. In the Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite, this is made very clear:

"Zeus the Father gave her [Hestia] a high honour instead of marriage, and she has her place in the midst of the house and has the richest portion. In all the temples of the gods she has a share of honour, and among all mortal men she is chief of the goddesses." [5.7]

Capital Cities - Safe And Sound

"Hestia... who dwellest amidst great fire's eternal flame; in sacred rites these ministers are thine, mystics much blessed, holy and divine. In thee the Gods have fixed their dwelling place, strong, stable basis of the mortal race." [Orphic Hymn 84 to Hestia]

This mix-tape is going to be about love. Not all of it, but most of it, I can already tell. The first song that popped into my mind was Capital Cities' 'Safe And Sound', which is--in essence--a love song. It shows the confidence of the singer, who knows he will be able to take care of his partner, no matter what. This, I relate very strongly to Hestia.

"You could be my luck / Even if the sky is falling down / I know that we'll be safe and sound."

Dionne Warwick - A House Is Not Home

This song must be on this list. There are no two ways about it. Dionne Warwick's song is a true classic and it sums up my thoughts of Hestia's influence on a house perfectly.

"I'm not meant to live alone / Turn this house into a home / When I climb the stair and turn the key / Oh, please be there still in love with me."

Daughter - Still

Hestia, to me, has always represented the heart of not only the house, but the seed of love that makes a house a home. No matter how bad the relationship may be, how much it's about to end; if you are still living together, and you still love, Hestia guards not only your home but your relationship. The strength it takes to work through relationship issues is where you find Hestia's greatest power: the spark of domestic bliss.

"Still with feet touching / still with eyes meeting / still our hands match / still with hearts beating."

Clean Bandit - Rather Be feat. Jess Glynne

This song is my current obsession, and it's a wonderful song for this list, as it highlights one of Hestia's most beautiful features: she inspires our home with the sense of peace and belonging that makes you want to return to it again, and again, and again, because it's where you belong.

"We staked out on a mission to find our inner peace / Make it everlasting so nothing's incomplete / It's easy being with you, sacred simplicity / As long as we're together, there's no place I rather be."

HAIM - Honey & I

To me, this song represents the importance of the home, but also the reminder that Hestia's power is a blanket, lying over cities and countries, and the entire world. I like being home. I much prefer it to the outside world, but some songs can't be played at home, be played alone--for some things in life you need to go out and have a beutiful life out there. And Hestia will still be there for you, regardless.

"Love wasn't what I thought it once was / But I thought it once was / Telling each other everything / Picking up your wedding rings / No, now I know and now I see / I'm not afraid no more / So why are you always trying to stay at home? / This song can't be played alone / It was made to be played with / My honey and I."
Alright, so it seems that I missed a bit of a deadline. Every month, Hellenion members pour a libation to a different Hellenic God or Goddess. Last month was Zeus' turn, but I must have missed a notification. I'm not a member of Hellenion, and will not be continuing this practice in the next Hellenic year, but I most certainly wanted to keep up the practice until then. Seeing as I missed His libation time and the mix-tape that goes with it, I will post the mix-tape today. I give libations to Zeus daily, so at least we're good in that department.

Handsome Poets - Sky On Fire

Back in the Summer of 2012, there were the London Olympics. Here in the Netherlands, every sports day ended with a recap in the 'Holland House', a meeting place for the athletes and the décor of a late-night sport's show. This song was the tune for that show, and it's irrevocably tied to the Olympics. As I have mentioned before, the ancient Olympics were held in honor of Zeus, and this song seems somehow fitting, not just because of the events I associate it with, but also the text.

The first time I heard this song, I thought 'Titanomachy'. Alright, I might spend a little too much time on my religion. That said, let me explain. This song screams victory song to me, the moment after the old generation is cast out by the new, and Zeus overlooks His new domain, knowing that the best is yet to come.

"Let's start a fire, a fire / new kids coming into town / lets get together / we take over now"

Christina Perri - A Thousand Years

Please ignore the horror that is Twilight in this video (or if you like it, enjoy it for all it's worth). In fact, I encourage you to listen to this one with your eyes closed. Imagine how Zeus comes to Hera in the form of a drenched bird, and she clutches Him to Her breast. He transforms back to his normal shape and overpowers Her, expressing His love for Her... or many years down the road, when Hómēros writes of Their love in the Iliad:

"Zeus, the Cloud-Driver, saw her, and instantly his sharp mind was overwhelmed by longing, as in the days when they first found love, sleeping together without their dear parents’ knowledge. [...] ‘Hera, [...] let us taste the joys of love; for never has such desire for goddess or mortal woman so gripped and overwhelmed my heart, not even when I was seized by love for Ixion’s wife, who gave birth to Peirithous the gods’ rival in wisdom; or for Acrisius’ daughter, slim-ankled Danaë, who bore Perseus, greatest of warriors; or for the far-famed daughter of Phoenix, who gave me Minos and godlike Rhadamanthus; or for Semele mother of Dionysus, who brings men joy; or for Alcmene at Thebes, whose son was lion-hearted Heracles; or for Demeter of the lovely tresses; or for glorious Leto; or even for you yourself, as this love and sweet desire for you grips me now.’” (XIV)
This is the mandatory love song, and as far as love songs go, I really enjoy this one.

"Darlin' don't be afraid / I have loved you for a / Thousand years / I'll love you for a / Thousand more"

Carina Round - Shoot

Youtube does not have an album version of this one, so please fast forward to the 2:30 mark. Alright, yes, I will admit that I chose this song mostly because of the thunder and lightning. That said, I also want you to feel the atmosphere, the draw that is in this song. The desire to get lost in the current. This song reminds me of the many women and men Zeus has seduced; his draw too great to resist--like a thunderbolt straight through the heart.

"Come with me falling through the red clouds helplessly /  Come kiss me so that I can read your lips / I feel a shoot / I feel a thunderbolt / Under my body / I feel a shoot / I feel a thunderbolt / The entrance of your soul"

 Deb Talan - Comfort

I looked for a song that expresses the safety, the care, and yes... the comfort I experience from honoring Zeus in His many epithets associated with the home. On a daily basis, I honor Zeus Ephestios (Overseer of the Hearth), Zeus Kthesios (He Who Guards the Pantry), Zeus Herkeios (protector of the enclosure of the house), and Zeus as King of the Gods, and when I still did a lot of outdoor work, I prayed to Zeus Ombrios to keep the rain away. I think this mix-tape is turning out somewhat 'soft' is because His influence in my life is very caring, very sheltering. To me, He has never been the 'fire and brimstone' God of the Lightning bolt who punishes those who trespass on Justice. I know it is a part of Him, but He has brought me too many good things to focus on that.

This song is about a mother's (or father's) love and care for a young child, and about the sacrifices you make as a parent to insure you child's wellbeing and happiness. I don't consider myself a child of Zeus, but this song oozes the comfort He makes me feel, and it is wonderful thing.

"In days to come / When your heart feels undone / May you always find an open hand / And take comfort wherever you can"

Jim Byrnes - Of Whom Shall I Be Afraid?

I wanted to end the mix-tapes with this song, not just for Zeus, but for all the Theoi. This version of the song was featured in the TV series 'Sanctuary' in which the singer plays a recurring character. The original version is much faster, and it doesn't quite convey the message, in my opinion. I sing this song to the Theoi sometimes, as I can't sing the hymns; I can just recite those. I have a few moderns songs that I sing to the Theoi in ritual, or when I'm in need of Their guidance; this is one of those. This is my pledge, my vow, to the Theoi. This is exactly the depth of my devotion to all of the Theoi, and Zeus--as King of the Gods--above all.

"I will go wherever you need me / On the river of roses or rain / I will follow the signs that you leave me / The mysteries of joy and of pain / I will search for light in the darkness / Though I stumble through shadow and shade / Oh if you are with me / Of whom shall I be afraid?
You have lifted me up when I have fallen / Driven the ghost from my door / You have comforted me in my sorrow / Wiped my brow when I’ve been sick and sore / You have shared in all of my triumphs / And blessed the crops that we laid / Oh if you are with me / Of whom shall I be afraid? / Oh if you are with me / Of whom shall I be afraid?"
Today, I'm posting a mix-tape for Apollon. This idea is not mine; it's a combination of a wonderful idea by Sannion and Hellenion's monthly libation schedule.Hellenion is a Hellenistic organization from America and I used their wonderful calender and the great store of information they have gathered to start my own practice. Every month, Hellenion members pour a libation to a different Hellenic God or Goddess. This month, it's Apollon's turn, and while I will not be continuing this practice in the next Hellenic year, I will most certainly keep up the practice until then. To make the day more special, I have created a mix-tape of songs which either describe or would speak to Him.

When I first came to Hellenismos, I felt very little draw towards Apollon. Truthfully, I still do not have a great connection to Him. I worship Him on His sacred days and during His festivals, but beyond Apollon Aguieus--protector of the streets, public places, and the entrances to homes--I don't feel a great personal connection to Him. There are many more Hellenic deities whom I worship lovingly and piously, but without an emotional link to my household practice, and to me, worshipping these deities without that deep connection is not a problem. It does, however, pose significant problems when making a mix-tape.

Because of this, this mix-tape will focus mostly on the bond I do have with Apollon, as a protector of the home, as a faithful brother to Artemis, as a warrior and archer, patron of the Muses, and a healer.

Kate Wolf - Brother Warrior

I love Kate Wolf, and this song is just perfect for Apollon, is all his many guises. A true ode to the warrior, the eternal youth, the wisdom He possesses, the prophet He is, and the Theos of light and the sun as it warms and comforts us. If I ever have an emotional connection with Apollon, it is when I listen to this song.

"With a heart like gold and a rainbow in your eyes / Brave companion / Do you see a world shining in the sky? / With your body dancing like an arrow / Spreading joy beneath your feet / And your hands they wave like the tall grass / In the wind as you speak / With the shyness of a small child / And the wisdom of a sage / I tell you now there is no reason to be afraid."

Antony and the Johnsons - You Are My Sister

One cannot make a mix-tape for Apollon without mentioning Artemis, His loving sister, who was born before Him of lovely Leto, and helped in His delivery. The two are so very similar: both warriors, archers, guardians. Both carry within darkness and the light, and both preside over transitional times in life. This song speaks to the beautiful bond They share, and the strength that Their bond provides for both of Them.

"You are my sister, we were born / So innocent, so full of need / There were times we were friends / but times I was so cruel / Each night I'd ask for you to watch me as I sleep / I was so afraid of the night."

Aimee Mann - The Moth
Confession time: I was in s band for about three seconds. Mostly it were three people dreaming of forming a band, but that's besides the point. This was the first song we decided to cover, and it has a very special place in my heart because of it. The Moth is a beautiful song, about the inevitabilities in life, about human desire. I like it for Apollon because it speaks to the slightly darker motives in human kind, but also the desire to improve oneself. Burning off the unneeded parts--a specialty of Apollon: purifying with light and fire--until you get to the core of your being. A healing, of sorts.

"The moth don't care if the flame burns low / 'cause moth believes in an afterglow / and flames are never doused completely / all you really need is a love of heat / no, the moth don't care if the flame burns low / So come on let's go ready or not / 'cause there's a flame I know hotter than hot / and with a fuse that's so thoroughly shot / away"

The Green Children - Feel The Light

Myth ascribes many a lover to Apollon. From the Muses, Daphne, Hyakinthos, and Kyrene to Cassandra, Cyparissus, and many more. He has fathered many children with those He has loved, and for this reason alone, I must include a love song in this mix tape. This is such a beautiful song when seen from the viewpoint of his lovers.

You are so beautiful when I see you glow in the dark / So turn off the light, just turn off the light / You don't have to see, to feel the light / Just turn off the light, just turn off the light / You don't have to see, to feel the love"

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Our House

I asked my girlfriend if she knew a song that could speak to Apollon as protector of the home. She's quite the music buff, so she needed only a few seconds to come up with this one. As soon as I heard it, I wondered why I hadn't thought of it myself. I love this song, and it's so obvious that it's perfect for Apollon-as-protector.

"I'll light the fire, you place the flowers in the vase that you bought today. / Staring at the fire for hours and hours while I listen to you / Play your love songs all night long for me, only for me. / Come to me now and rest your head for just five minutes, everything is done. / Such a cozy room, the windows are illuminated by the / Evening sunshine through them, fiery gems for you, only for you. / Our house is a very, very fine house with two cats in the yard, life used to be so hard, / Now everything is easy cause of you."
Today, I'm posting a mix-tape for Artemis. This idea is not mine; it's a combination of a wonderful idea by Sannion and Hellenion's monthly libation schedule. Hellenion is a Hellenistic organization from America and I used their wonderful calender and the great store of information they have gathered to start my own practice. Every month, Hellenion members pour a libation to a different Hellenic God or Goddess. This month, it's Artemis' turn, and while I will not be continuing this practice in the next Hellenic year, I will most certainly keep up the practice until then. To make the day more special, I have created a mix-tape of songs which either describe or would speak to Her.

Artemis is one of the few Hellenic Gods I'm fearful of. Artemis deals harshly with those who oppose Her, or anyone She loves. Picking songs for Her was slightly nerve-wrecking, I must admit. Artemis is most closely connected to women, and often enters their lives on the cusp of change: during their transition from girl to woman, during childbirth, and at the moment of their deaths. These are emotionally turbulent times, connected to a wild variety of pain, and while Artemis' connection to woodlands and animals is soothing, I'm always aware of the danger that belies Her touch upon humanity.

While Her brother Apollon has a similar connection to men as Artemis has to women, Artemis' connection to the dark of night--even if She's connected to its only source of light--always reminds me of the imminent danger Artemis' touch might bestow. As such, picking songs became a challenge, as the last thing I want to do is piss off a powerful deity like Artemis. On the other hand, I also didn't want to go full 'colors of the wind' on this. The result is what follows, and I hope it appeals to Her, and to you.

Björk - Hunter

A mix-tape to Artemis needs to include at least one Björk song. This must be a rule somewhere. As the eternally youthful hunter, the Far-Shooter--like her brother, Apollon--the mystery and subject matter must speak to a Theia as Artemis. Also, bonus points for the bear, an animal Artemis is highly associated with.

"I'm going hunting / I'm the hunter, I'm the hunter / I'm going hunting."

I Am Oak - On Trees and Birds and Fire

I adore 'I Am Oak', but I chose this song not for my love for them, but for the longing to be close to nature, and the memories of our youth that this song raises in me. It is a longing I could ascribe to Artemis as well, in Her epithets relating to nature and the wilds.

"Trees, oh trees / do you remember me / from before? / And birds, oh birds / can you recall my songs / from before? Fire, oh fire / I can still feel your warmth / like before."

Idina Menzel - Brave

Idina is always a bit... melodramatic, but I love the inclusion of rites of passage, the bravery it takes to get through the trials in life Artemis watches over. As I mentioned before, these points in our lives that Artemis touches, these are some of the most final. It goes with a bit of pain. Doing it right, however, means moving on to new challenges, and greater opportunities.

If this is the moment I stand here on my own / If this is my right of passage / That somehow leads me home / I might be afraid but it's my turn to be brave."

The Cardigans - My Favourite Game

As someone who got her first taste of music in the nineties, It's no surprise I chose The Cardigans to relate to the aspect of Her that does not tolerate disrespect by men. The other options were Garbage's 'When I Grow Up', and 'Open Your Eyes' by Guano Apes. Whatever the case, mythology is clear: crushes on Artemis, or accidentally running into Her while bathing, is lethal. As Apollodorus relates:

"To Autonoe and Aristaios was born a son Aktaion, who was reared by Kheiron and trained as a huntsman, but was later eaten up on Kithairon by his own dogs [because] . . . he saw Artemis bathing. They say that the goddess changed him on the spot into a deer, and drove his fifty hunting dogs into a frenzy so that they unintentionally ate him. When he was no more, they looked for their master with great howls and bays, coming in the course of their search to Kheiron’s cave. He made a likeness of Aktaion, which assuaged their grief."

"And this is not a case of lust, you see / it's not a matter of you versus of me. / It's fine the way you want me on your own / but in the end it's always me alone."

Nina Simone - Feeling Good

Artemis is a virgin Goddess, a Goddess who does not need a male to define Her, who rules over femininity without necessarily linking it to masculinity. The power to live your own life, independently, is a promise to those who revere Artemis. And Nina Simone? Perhaps one of the most independent women to have ever graced the planet. I don't hate the link to nature either.

"Stars when you shine you know how I feel / Scent of the pine you know how I feel / Oh freedom is mine / And I know how I feel."
Today, I'm posting a mix-tape for Hēphaistos. This month, it's Hēphaistos' turn, and while I will not be continuing this practice in the next Hellenic year, I will most certainly keep up the practice until then. To make the day more special, I have created a mix-tape of songs which either describe or would speak to Him.

I have a deep love and respect for Hēphaistos. I feel He is one of the most undervalued of all Olympian Theoi. Hēphaistos is a builder, a doer, one of brilliant mind. A hard worker, an engineer, a crafter, and a Theos of the common folk. The ancient Hellenes had a deep love for Him as well, because His worship was widespread, and every epicenter of worship developed different mythology about Him, causing a tangled mess of wives and children to be linked to Him.

Most famous of His wives is Aphrodite, who was given to Him after Hēphaistos took revenge on Hera for casting Him off of Olympos due to His lameness. Hēphaistos trapped Hera on a golden throne of His design and refused to let Her up again. Dionysos eventually drugged Him and took Him back to Olympos where Hera's freedom was traded for Aphrodite. Aphrodite, famously, resented the marriage, and had multiple affairs. This may have caused the couple to divorce. Other wives and lovers include the Kharite Aglaia, the nymph Kabeiro on the island of Lemnos, the nymph Aitna in Sicily, Thalia, and mortal women Antikleia, Atthis, and Okresia.

Edie Carey - With Our Hands

Sorry for the crappy quality; that's what happens when you find inspiration in artists who are relatively unknown. This song is about love. I really wanted a love song in here. Hēphaistos, to me, is a wonderfully strong and skilled God, but His love for Aphodite has always been His weak point. The most notable of Her affairs is, of course, Ares. Still, Hēphaistos takes Her back whenever She comes to his palace on Olympus. Edie's song is equal parts romantic and sad; there is a need to be loved hidden in the words that I can see in Hēphaistos as a part He keeps locked away as much as possible but which must come out when He discovers a new affair of His beloved.

Kensington - So Am I

The link I have to Hēphaistos with this song is visceral. The drum rhythm matches up with the beating of His heart, with the ring as the hammer comes down on the metal, with the frustration of His marriage to Aphrodite--and its coming end--with the feeling of getting lost in repetition, a melody to ease the mind.

Secondly, in some of the vulcano-rich places of the Hellenic world, Hēphaistos was linked to the local Theoi preciding over the mountains. The Edna, for example. Especially with the frequent mention of fire and fire bursting from the earth, I think this song is perfect for Hēphaistos.

"The fire's faded, now the smoke we're in / Will leave us nothing more than scalded skin / Our memories in the ashes Fires we burned up, burst from the centre of the earth / We're the centre of the earth / It's strange how it gets me / It's fate if you ask me"

Carina Round - Do You

The song is intended as a romantic love song, but please take that element out of it when listening to it. Think, instead, of Hēphaistos, as He speaks to His mother, a tale of the sting of rejection, and the love a child has for their mother, regardless of what has happened in the past. Regular readers of this blog know I have a troubled relationship with my mother, so I identify with this side of Hēphaistos, although I think He has come fully into His own after getting His revenge on Hera.

"See those wings you gave me / Watch me fly across the sea / Count the ways you made me The hurt that the head forgets / the heart will always remember / The hold that the hand regrets / the heart remembers forever"

Alan Jackson - Hard Hat and a Hammer

For true blue, average Joe, music, you need to go to the Country genre. I have a secret love for country. I love the simplicity, the common folk vibe. Take this song, about a man who takes pride in his working man job, and asks his God to bless him and others like him. Kinda fitting, don't you think?

"But there's nothing wrong with a hard hat and a hammer / Kind of glue that sticks this world together / Hands of steel and cradle of the Promised Land / God bless the working man... And woman"

Zac Brown band - Chicken Fried

I want to end this mix-tape on a positive note, because I feel Hēphaistos is a positive Theos. He's content in life, is married happily in a lot of the myths--especially the ones where He lives away from Olympos with anyone but Aphrodite--and he works hard. I imagine that when He comes home, he wouldn't mind a kylix of home-made wine, and a bit of fried chicken. Also, and I love that this is in the song, there is nothing as wonderful as a mother's love, and at the end of the day, Hēphaistos sits in the great hall of snowy Olympos, near His mother, working well together.
Today, I'm posting a mix-tape for Aphrodite. This month, it's Aphrodite's turn, and while I will not be continuing this practice in the next Hellenic year, I will most certainly keep up the practice until then. To make the day more special, I have created a mix-tape of songs which either describe or would speak to Her.

Aphrodite has a modern PR problem: she's described as an air-headed woman with jealousy issues, who is only concerned with romantic love, while in ancient Hellas, Aphrodite was the Goddess who personified love in all its forms, from romantic, to obsessive, to abusive, to paid for. She rejoices in physical desire and beauty. In a form, She is the anti-Hera--who puts the sanctity of marriage above all--although she also has a marriage epithet (Aphrodite Hera, Αφροδιτη Ἡρη). Aphrodite's marriage to Hēphaistos is not only portrayed as an arranged one, it is also a childless marriage--a rare oddity in ancient Hellas, where the lack of legitimate children was feared above all. The only children Aphrodite has are with her lovers, mostly with Ares, Hermes and Dionysos. Aphrodite might have, in fact, divorced Hēphaistos, a very rare occurrance in ancient Hellenic life, as well as in the lives of the Theoi.

Also famously, ritual prostitution was a valid form of worship for Aphrodite in Cyprus, the center of her cult, in Cythera, Corinth and in Sicily. The women were called 'hierodoule' (ἱεροδούλη), temple slave, and 'made love' with paying customers. The practice was considered distinctly 'un-Hellenic' by 460 BC, but it made Corinth very wealthy, indeed. The practice seems to have lingered in converted Corinth from earlier worship of Astarte, who was brought into the pantheon as Aphrodite in Hellas. Pindar describes this exact practice beautifully in his 'Eulogies' (Fragment 122):

"Young women visited by many, servants of Peitho in rich Corinth, you who burn the tawny tears of pale frankincense, on many occasions fluttering in thought to the Uranian mother of desires, Aphrodite--To you she has granted without the possibility of refusal, O children, to have the fruit of your soft bloom plucked in lovely beds. And with necessity, everything is beautiful."

Aphrodite is the patron, protector and avenger of hierodoule as well as hetairai--female companions, a term used non-sexually for women, about women, but used by men to indicate a woman hired for entertainment, often leading to sex. She passes no judgement on those who enjoy the sanctity of sex and offers protection to those who practice it for money. When these women (usually, anyway) were wronged, they could call upon Aphrodite to have their abuser punished. And so, I'm going to start off this mix-tape with a song by Donna Summer, because it's a song about prostitution that is a little sad but also empowering.

Donna Summers - Bad Girls

This 1979 single was released by American singer Donna Summer, who was inspired to write it after one of her assistants was offended by a police officer who thought she was a street prostitute. I don't know, exactly, how prostitution was viewed in ancient Hellas, and if the women were looked down upon or pitied for their profession, but sacred sex was something that happened, regardless.

"Hey, mister, have you got a dime? / Mister, do you want to spend some time? Oh, yeah / I got what you want; you got what I need / I'll be your baby; come and spend it on me"

Poe - Hey Pretty (Drive By 2001 mix)

To stay with the theme, I'm moving on to a song about S-E-X. No one thought this post would be suitable for the work environment, right? Anyway, I adore Poe. She has a uniquely haunted sound, and has never been afraid to push a few boundaries. There are many songs about sex, and many are more explicit. What I like about Poe, though, is the sexual prowess of the woman in relation to the passiveness of the man, and the narrative, which is sexy as hell because of its slow build. I also love the fantastic spoof of a video that accompanies the song, but that might just be personal taste. Bonus points: the guy in the video is Poe's brother. Remind you of someone?

"Hey pretty, don't you wanna take a ride with me / Through my world? / Hey pretty, don't you wanna kick a slide / Through my world? / (Do you get the gist of the song now?)"

Imogen Heap - The Walk

I posted an Imogen Heap video for the Ares mix-tape (and Hera's but that's mostly unrelated) so it seems only fitting I include one for Aphrodite as well, especially when the accompanying song tackles Aphrodite's infidelity to her husband and attraction to Her lovers. While the song suggests some trepidation in the face of overwhelming feelings of desire for someone who one should not feel desire for, I am certainly not sure that was--and is--ever the case for Aphrodite. She seems to relish Her lovers, and in the time spent with them. Yet, I could see someone praying to Aphrodite to make these feelings go away, especially in modern society. Also, that desire described right there? Definitely Aphrodite's doing.

"Big trouble losing control / primary resistance at a critical low / on the double gotta get a hold / point of no return one second to go
No response on any level/ red alert this vessels under siege / total overload, systems down, they've got control / there's no way out, we are surrounded / give in, give in and relish every minute of it"

Rihanna - Disturbia

I must be very clear that there are no ancient sources that connect Aphrodite specifically to any form of madness, yet, we all know love makes you crazy sometimes. Obsessive love, kinky love, desires that are frowned upon by society--Aphrodite covers those too, I'm quite sure.

"Put on your pretty lies, you're in the city of wonder / ain’t gon’ play nice, watch out you might just go under / better think twice, your train of thought will be altered / so if you must falter be wise
Your mind’s in disturbia, it's like the darkness is light / disturbia, am I scaring you tonight? / disturbia, ain’t used to what you like / disturbia, disturbia"

Pat Benatar - Love is a Battlefield

I must end this mix-take with a very 80's video of the very aphrodesian Pat Benatar. This women-power power ballad represents all the best parts of Aphrodite's domain; from the epic love, to the pain it can cause, to the love for friends (and family), and the love for the self that Aphrodite governs just as much as external love.  Love is a battlefield sometimes, but Aphrodite can ease the fight--unless you work against Her, then She will kick your ass. If that ass-kicking incorporates over-rehearsed dance routines, you'll have to find out for yourself, though.

"We are young, heartache to heartache we stand / no promises, no demands / love is a battlefield
We are strong, no one can tell us we're wrong / searchin' our hearts for so long, both of us knowing / love is a battlefield"
Today, I'm posting a mix-tape for Hera. This month, it's Hera's turn, and while I will not be continuing this practice in the next Hellenic year, I will most certainly keep up the practice until then. To make the day more special, I have created a mix-tape of songs which either describe or would speak to Her.

Hera is one of the Theia who has gotten a pretty bad reputation throughout the years. She's seen as frigid, vengeful and jealous. Truthfully, Her husband's escapades, combined with Her own principles, must have started to make eternal life pretty frustrating for the Queen of the Theoi. Unsurprisingly, many of the chosen songs have to do with Hera's relationship with Zeus, and dealing with his cheating ways, but we start off on a more positive note (and end it that way as well, incidentally).

Nicki Minaj - Moment 4 Life

We start at the beginning, a young Hera, reborn from Kronos, regurgitated and standing on mount Olympus, looking out over the kingdom that She and Her brothers and sisters have taken from the previous generation of Deathless entities who have ruled the planet. A young Hera, full of hope; the world full of promises.

"Ain't being cocky, we just vindicated / Best believe that when we done this moment will be syndicated / I don't know, this night just remind me of / Everything they deprived me of
This is my moment, I waited all my life I can tell its time / drifting away I'm one with the sunsets, I have become alive."

Doria Roberts - Perfect

This is the song my girlfriend and I will play/sing/serenade at our wedding. It's been 'our song' since my girlfriend put it on the first mix-tape she ever made me. It's my ode to marriage, my ode to love, and my ode to staying together with the person you love as long as you possibly can, enjoying every single minute you have with that person. Hera is the Theia of marriage, and one day, I'll invite Her into mine.

"Let’s take a picture now / I do not want to forget / The way you look at me when / everything is perfect / A perfect memory of when things are so good / And everything has worked out just the way we knew it would."

The Naked and Famous - Young Blood

We move on, to Hera's marriage and young love with Her brother; beautiful and eternal, but overshadowed by the first of what will be many affairs. This song has that beautiful mix of hope and pain--the desire to move past the pain and back to the naive love that you once had with the person who has just crushed you.

"We're only young and naive still / We require certain skill / The mood it changes like the wind / Hard to control when it begins
The bittersweet between my teeth / Trying to find the in-between / Fall back in love / eventually / Yeah yeah yeah yeah"

Charlotte Martin - Every Time It Rains

The darkest of the songs, although others seem to interpret this song as positive. Listen to it from the viewpoint of Hera, talking to Her husband, Their fighting, Their crying, over His betrayal, and Her own frustrations for never standing up to Him. Set just before the events of her coupe, this is Hera at Her weakest, Her darkest. This is the moment before everything got better. The rain, then, is obviously a link to Zeus the Thunderer, conqueror and creator of storms, thrower of the illuminating lightning.

"When it was getting dark, I didn't need a match / I never needed light to see you / You thought I disappeared but I was always here / I could never get that far from you
Though I misunderstand and been misunderstood / So love me 'cause you can and not because you should
Every time it rains / I know it's good to be alive / Every time it rains / I know I'm trying to survive"

Imogen Heap - Shine

Moving on; Zeus has learned to better His ways, but not before putting Hera in Her place. This is the defining moment in Their relationship: the calm after the storm. Hera takes Her place as true Queen of the Gods and finds Her strength.

"Shine - I will not cry and I will not die no / Shine - I will be there for me / Shine - I'll be just fine if I stay all mine / I'll shine, shine."
Today, I'm posting a mix-tape for Dionysos. This month, it's Dionysos' turn, and while I will not be continuing this practice in the next Hellenic year, I will most certainly keep up the practice until then. To make the day more special, I have created a mix-tape of songs which either describe or would speak to Him.

Dionysos is a very varied Theos. His domains range from fertility, and exuberance, to death and dying. He is both an Ouranic Theos and a Khthonic one. I spoke about him a lot yesterday, mostly in his function as a Year-Daímōn, but today, I want to celebrate even more aspects of Him and His worship.

Bitch and Animal - Best Cock on the Block

I have to start this mix-tape with an Ode to the Dildo, as Dionysos' worship often involved carrying around giant phallic-shaped objects around town. I'm not sure if I even have to say this, but this song is NSFW in so many ways.

"What Can I Say/ They Can't Stay Away / From the Best Cock / On the Block Today"

DJ Fresh ft. Rita Ora - Hot Right Now

I... am not allowed to say much about this one. Call it UPG and know it refers to a fantastic afternoon. In fact, that afternoon cemented the fact that I needed to progress into Hellenismos. No matter what, this song will always remind me of Dionysos.

Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit

I'm sure I do not have to explain this one, with Dionysos' affinity for ecstatic rites. White Rabbit, for me, is the ultimate song about drug use (along with 'Whiter Shade of Pale', but that's because of this). I'm sure Dionysos approved greatly of the flower-power era.

"And you've just had some kind of mushroom / And your mind is moving / low / Go ask Alice / I think she'll know"

Aleah - Water and Wine

This is one of those songs that--especially when on repeat--makes me lose track of time, and my surroundings. The darkness in there reminds me of the darkest sides of Dionysos, reminds me of the madness  He can bring on, the obsession, the horror He can put humans through by beguiling their minds. It also speaks to the search for divinity, through any means necessary, and the painful reminder of our human condition when we fail again and again to be part of the Gods.

"Show me Your Sign / Water and Wine / I need You to be / More than a Voice in me"

Lifehouse - Quasimodo

I need to end this mix-tape with an incredibly personal story. This song may have quite literally saved my life. I spoke about my youth before, about my mother's illness, and her suicide threats. By the time I turned sixteen, I was hanging on by a thread. I wasn't suicidal, but I wasn't enjoying life very much. For years, I had been coming home, scared of what I might find. For years, I had worried about my mother, our family, and all the normal teen things on top. I was at my breaking point; I was either going to crash and burn, or get help. I had been too scared to ask for help before. I was afraid of adding to my mother's misery and driving her over the edge. My father had just gone through his own bout of depression the year before and I could not go through another day in the way I had been doing: not feeling--not living.

And then, my parents gave me the first Lifehouse CD as a birthday present. I listened to this song and something inside me snapped. Up in my room--in true teenage angst fashion--I just cried and cried and cried until I couldn't cry anymore. I still end up on the verge of tears every time I hear this song. I vowed that--one day--the lyrics to this song would hold true for me: I would let go of the worry, of the pain, and the responsibility and I would heal and move on. I would throw off the chains that were weighing me down.

The next day, I told my parents I needed to see a therapist. They took me to our general physician and he got me in a youth counseling program with one-on-one conversations. I unloaded everything onto the psychiatrist. She spoke to me, she spoke to my parents, and we had a few talks as a family unit. Nothing changed at home, but she was the first person who told me it was alright that I couldn't take on this responsibility, and it was not my fault I was at the end of my rope. She told me I had every right to be treated as a daughter, not a counselor, and while I continued to be a counselor for my parents for five more years, she gave me the tools I needed to distance myself enough from the situation to get through it.

Without this song, I don't know where I would be, but I doubt I'd be as sound of mind and in as stable a situation as I am in now. Dionysos has a very special epithet: Lysios (Λυσιος), meaning 'to release' or 'of releasing'. Dionysos Lysios is the releaser of worries, the uplifter of doubt and madness. It is this epithet of Dionysos I feel closest to when I hear this song.

"There goes my pain / There goes my chains / Did you see them falling / Because this feeling / There has no meaning / There goes the world / Off of my shoulders / There goes the world / Off of my back / There it goes"
Today, I'm posting a mix-tape for Ares. This idea is not mine; it's a combination of a wonderful idea by Sannion and Hellenion's monthly libation schedule. Hellenion is a Hellenistic organization from America and I've been using their wonderful calender and the great store of information they have gathered to start my own practice. Every month, Hellenion members pour a libation to a different Hellenic God or Goddess. This month, it's Ares' turn. To make the day more special, I have created a mix-tape of songs which either describe or would speak to Him.

In every community, there must be one who gets the short end of the stick. I'm afraid that for the Theoi, that short end was given to Ares. In a society where strategy, logic, control and a clear mind were key, Ares' temper, His bloodlust, His rage always put Him in a disadvantage. In most of His myths, He loses. In others, he is ridiculed. He's on the losing side of the Trojan war; he gets caught by Hēphaistos while sleeping with Aphrodite. It isn't pretty. Yet, Ares is a powerful Theos, a feared Theos, and as such, He deserves the most loyal of worship.

Imogen Heap - Whatever

Ares plays immortal life loose and fast, and who in their right mind would say no to Aphrodite anyway? Yet, I can also understand that playing loose and fast with one's heart would suck, even if you're a God. So, I always feel He just deals with it; accepts his weakness for the beautiful Goddess and takes it as it comes.

"You, you come to me / So perfectly yeah /So perfectly made
And you're all that you are / And you're all that you said / You're so exquisitely bred / Hmm yeah what more can I say
So yeah, yeah / I guess it's alright / Yeah, no, no / I guess it's alright whatever"

Timbaland - The Way I Are

I have no good excuse for this one, but I think Ares would love to go clubbing to this one. All the lyrics would be just as much a lie from Him as they are from Timbaland, and I think it would score Him just as much girls.

We all know Ares is a player; he's had countless women and fathered well over fifty children--and that's not even including the Amazons. He's also the 'bad boy' of the bunch. In my opinion, this is a perfect song to honor that.

Casey Stratton - Blood

I would have linked to the album version if I was on youtube but alas... As it is, I'm a big fan of Casey's first album, Standing at the Edge. There's something incredibly moving about his music. Take 'Blood'; it's one of my favorites in that it sways you into the madness, the deep, dark desire for the unspeakables of life. It fits Ares' obsession with the liquid red to a tee. Ares got hurt in the Trojan war, a strike aided by Athena. The lyrics are so very fitting for vengeance in the name of justice.

"I can remember the pain / My river of red that would eventually stain me / Now it's your turn to swim / Open your latitude line - let me in
Yes it's time to go / Time to drain you down / Time to let those fears come to the surface"

Garbage - Only Happy When It Rains

I don't think it's necessarily true, that Ares only enjoys his days when others suffer, or when everything is depressing. Yet, we all know the feeling, when you are so... angry, so unfulfilled, so on edge that brazenly moving through the rain, letting it soak you completely, and watching others try to avoid getting wet is the only way to deal with what you feel inside. I feel Ares so very close to me then, howling with laughter at the poor souls depriving themselves of life's darkest joys. Sometimes, we are only happy when it rains. That's when I feel Ares closes to me.

M.I.A. - Born Free (!NSFW!)

I can not repeat this enough: this video is not suitable for work. Then again, it's on the news every night, isn't it? Wrapped in pretty word packages and hate speech: genocide; the slaughter of war. I could have picked any of a hundred protest songs for my last one--as Ares is also the inciter of righteous anger and civil unrest--but I chose Born Free for it's lack of cover-up. This video is about an ethnic (loosely interpreted) group, being rounded up by the regime and either shot or send running through a minefield. It isn't pretty, it isn't fair, it makes my blood boil, but I feel this video (and--of course--the many real life examples it was based on) would have Ares howling with rage. This is not the honor-filled war of the ancient Hellens; this is a massacre--as are all our wars these days. I don't think Ares, God of war, would agree one single bit with our definition of the word war. Not one, single, bit.
Today, I'm posting a mix-tape for Poseidon. This idea is not mine; it's a combination of a wonderful idea by Sannion and Hellenion's monthly libation schedule. Hellenion is a Hellenistic organization from America and I've been using their wonderful calender and the great store of information they have gathered to start my own practice. Every month, Hellenion members pour a libation to a different Greek God or Goddess. This month, it's Poseidon's. To make the day more special, I have created a mix-tape of songs which either describe or would speak to Him.

Poseidon is the God of the Mediterranean seas, who can strike down his trident and create fresh water springs, or disastrous earthquakes. He is also the Lord of horses, presumably because of the foamy waves rising up like a herd of horses before crashing on the shore. He has made his home underwater, with his wife Amphitrite and other water creatures, many of which immortal. He's a powerful God, one of three brothers who rule the sky, the sea and the underworld.

My relationship with Poseidon is neutral, at best. I worship Him as a powerful God, but I'm not exactly a water rat, and I don't like swimming in the sea. I did enjoy the seas of Greece when I was there, but that was mostly because they were marginally cooler than the surrounding area. These mix-tapes force me to delve into the God or Goddess at hand, and hopefully get me little closer to Them. I feel like I have succeeded at this with Poseidon, but we're still at a bit of odd footing.

Live - Run to the Water

The first song I thought of when I started brainstorming for this mix-tape was Live's run to the water. They have a lot of water-y songs. 'Dolphin's Cry', for one, and 'Overcome', the chilling 9/11 tribute. Run to the water is one of my favorites by them, and just for the clip alone, would serve its purpose well in a mix-tape to Poseidon. The lyrics, however, are quite fitting as well.

"Yeah, I can see it now lord / Out beyond all the breakin' of waves / And the tribulation / It's a place and the home of ascended souls / Who swam out there in love"

Another line which speaks to Poseidon is this one:

"In a moment we lost our minds here / And lay our spirit down / Today we lived a thousand years / All we have is now"

Poseidon is not merely the Lord of the Seas, he was also a shaker of the earth... and the mind. Certain conditions, which were accounted to madness back in the day, were attributed to Poseidon. Epilepsy is one of them, for instance. And anyone who has ever dived down into the sea and stayed down as long as they could, know that time loses all meaning beneath the waves. It's an entirely different world, one where the rules of land life fade--including time.

Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians - Air of December

Poseidon has had many lovers beyond his wife Amphitrite. Most of them were mortal. Amymone, for example, as well as Cleito, Kaineus, and Tyro. All of these couplings were extraordinary in some way; Cleito, for example, was the mother of the founders of Atlantis, Kaineus was transformed--by request--into a man after her raped her, so she would never be raped again. It was a request Poseidon granted. We all know what happened to Médousa.

A coupling with the powerful Poseidon means a life forever changed. I can imagine some of his lovers to look back favorably upon their time with Him, and long for his return. Edie captures this longing perfectly in her song.

"You stood by the lake/ I wanted to take you for granted / The grass was thin and high / The water mirrored tiny sparkles to the sky / I remember you put a chill across my face / like the air of december / I swear I remember it that way"

The Organ - Brother

I imagine the confusion after having grown up in your father's belly and then being spit out into the world to be a daunting affair indeed. Imagine this song, as the situation comes to Poseidon, and decisions must be made now the world is about to go to hell, fast, as a war with the Titans seems unavoidable. Also, Poseidon never seems to me the most... joyous of the brothers.

"Here we go again / Oh midnight knocks! / Oh explosions! / Maybe it's all made up in our heads / This happens to me when I'm bored / Or depressed"

Dar Williams - The Light and the Sea

I've used a song from the album 'In the Time of the Gods' before, for Hermes' mix tape, before. This one was written with Poseidon in mind and it's too beautiful to leave out of this list.

Florence & The Machine - Shake it Out

Something about this song just reminds me of Poseidon's dark but comforting prescence. It could be the mention of shaking--as Poseidon is also know as the Earth Shaker--or horses--as He is also the Tamer of Horses--that reminds me of it. Also, the line 'it's always darkest before the dawn' reminds me of watching the sun rising while looking out over the sea. The quiet, the true shaking of emotions as you realize a new day is forthcoming. Whatever the case, this mix-tape needed to end with this song. I could listen to this song forever.
Today, I'm posting a mix-tape for Demeter, Persephone and Hades. This idea is not mine; it's a combination of a wonderful idea by Sannion and Hellenion's monthly libation schedule. Hellenion is a Hellenic organization from America and I've been using their wonderful calender and the great store of information they have gathered to start my own practice. Every month, Hellenion members pour a libation to a different Hellenic God or Goddess. This month, it's Demeter and Persephone's turn. To make the day more special, I have created a mix-tape of songs which either describe or would speak to Them.

Demeter, Goddess of the harvest, and her daughter Kore (named Persephone after her abduction by Hades) are best known for the myth in which Hades abducts Persephone, and Demeter is left to wander the earth in search of Her, neglecting her duties and thus creating winter. For a slightly longer cliff-note version, go here. Unsurprising, many of these mix-tape songs are inspired by that myth.

Alison Krauss and Union Station - My Love Follows You Where You Go

If you ignore the Jesus mention (or change it to Demeter), it's very easy to envision Hades watching Persephone, both before and after her abduction. I do believe Hades loves Persephone very much and it must hurt Him very much that His wife constantly longs for a way out. Some telling lyrics:

"When you wake up and the world is cruel and cold / My love follows you where you go"
"Seeing you stand there, staring at the unknown / I won't pretend that it's not killing me / Watching you walk away slow"

Brooke Fraser - Scarlet

I love this song. I envision this playing over a movie scene where Demeter finally collapses in fear, exhaustion and grief over her daughter as she has searched fruitlessly for her for many days. Some lyrics:

"Your mind is swollen / From months of thought without release / They've taken their toll on you / And this very moment / Of timid and fragile honesty / Is precious and rare and fleeting"

Boy - July

Envision this song as Persephone is finally let go from the underworld to rejoin her mother. This song can function perfectly as Demeter's lament of her daughter's return.

"And the nightmares and monsters / Your biggest fears / Seem lightyears away / No, they won't find you here"
"I'll hold your head my dear / Make sure no one's gonna wake you / Tomorrow you'll still be here / No matter where your dreams will take you"

Ben Howard - The Fear

Finally on the myth, modern UPG often seems to reveal that Persephone might actually like her marriage to Hades very much... or even that She let Herself be stolen away. Listen to this from the standpoint of Demeter, abandoned, worried and alone.

Lee Ann Womack - I Hope You Dance

I'm ending this mix-tape with Lee Ann's ode to her children. This is the song I have wanted to sing to my children since I was a teen. It's one of the purest songs a mother can sing to a child and it seems like a perfect end for this tape.
Today, I'm posting a mix-tape for Hermes. This month, it's Hermes' turn. To make the day more special, I have created a mix-tape of songs which either describe or would speak to Hermes.

Hermes has so many aspects to His worship. He started out as a fertility God but soon transformed into an inventor, a thief, a joker, a messenger, an athlete, a trader and a protector of travelers and gamblers. Fitting all that into five songs is just about impossible so I took only a few of his epithets into account for his mix-tape.

Owl City - To The Sky

This is the Hermes I relate to most. In my Olympus Tarot, Hermes is the Chariot and the image used for that relates so beautifully to this song, I had to include it. It's the freedom of flight, the joy of amoral life, the blessings of youth.

Blonde Redhead - Messenger

First off; here are the lyrics; the song is pretty incomprehensible. Hermes is a messenger of the Gods as well as, on occasion, of mortals. He also helps souls cross to the Underworld. More about that below. Hermes is also a lover; loving, lusting after and sleeping with his fair share of women, nymphs and Goddesses. I often envisioning him heading towards or from dalliance with one of his many lovers.

As a messenger you must be known / With messages you must return / To be seen by demanding hands / And touches of jealous men / Invisible and forgivable / To all their secret adds

How can I keep anything to myself / Behind those clouds / I'm almost home

ACDC - Highway To Hell

This one might be a bit lame and disrespecful but really, envision Hermes in these lyrics and I need not say more, do I? Yet, I will, because Hermes' role as a psychopomp is not know to many Pagans. In his epithet of Hermes Psykhopompos, Hermes guides the souls of the deceased to the Underworld, and as such, Hermes is one of the very few Deities who can enter and leave Hades at will. Messages to and from the Underworld are therefor a very important part of Hermes' messenger duty.

The Opposites - Slapeloze Nachten

This is a Dutch song, sorry about that, but the song isn't difficult. It's about the singer who can't fall asleep as he's thinking too much about the next day. Hermes, as a messenger, is also the bringer of dreams which were created by Zeus. He's therefor also associated with sleep. With Hermes involved, the singer of The Opposites won't be awake much longer.

Dar Williams - You Will Ride With Me Tonight

I adore Dar Williams. I used one of her songs for Athena's mix-tape as well. This song is from her newest album; In the Time of Gods and was written especially with Hermes in mind. Listen to it and then listen to it three more times. Let the spirit of Hermes flow through you. I will be eternally grateful to Dar for this entire album.
Today, I'm posting a mix-tape for Athena. This month, it's Athena's turn.

I poured my libation today and found it a wonderful experience. Yet, I also want to do something special for these libation days, another way of honoring these Deities. I've never been much for mix-tapes, although I did make one for my girlfriend once. Still, it's a good way to figure out what the Deity is really about and what They mean to you--or me, in this case.

For this mix-tape series, I will limit myself to five songs, each. So, without further ado; my mix-tape to Athena.

Ani Difranco - Gratitude (live)

In the Olympian version of Athena's birth, Hēphaistos helped birth Her by liberating her from Zeus, Her father's head. A little later on, He turned around on her and attempted to rape Her. She rebuffed Him and Erichthonius was born from Gaea. Athena raised him as Her own. Ani's song tells of an experience where she, after receiving help, was forced to repay the favor in a sexual manner. I'm especially partial to the lines 'what does my body have to do with my gratitude?' and 'you can't write me off and you don't turn me on'.

Spiral Dance - The Goddess and the Weaver

I think this is a beautiful retelling of the myth of Athena and Arachne. It, of course, had to be included.

Andy Bull Feat. Lisa Mitchell - Dog

I am going to share a bit of UGP (and SPG) on Athena for this one. I have interacted with Pallas Athena a lot. One night, she shared some of Her story with me. After being born from Zeus' head, the young Athena was sent to Triton who was tasked to raise Her. Triton had a daughter, a Nymph named Pallas and the two became friends; friends so close they blurred the lines between friendship and love. One day, Zeus came to check up on His daughter and found Her in mock combat with Pallas, with Athena practicing Her spear-play. Distracted by the Aegis, held by Zeus, Athena struck down Pallas, who died in Her arms. Athena, unconsolable, vowed to remain a virgin, realizing Her love could only have been given to Pallas and took the name of the Nymph to keep her memory alive.

This song reminds me of this story. I'll link here to the lyrics because they're a bit hard to hear. In short, it's the story of young Pallas Athena coming to terms with that She has done, Her struggle to learn from the experience, coming to terms with the realization She really did love Pallas as much more than a friend, and move on as a harder Goddess who has sworn off love.

Dar Williams - As Cool as I Am (live)

The above video is, obviously, a live version. the CD version is here. I was inspired to post the live version, as so I did. The mix-tape is not for me, after all.

This is one of my favorite songs by Dar Williams and the one sentence that always stays with me is 'I will not be afraid of women'. And I think that Athena is very afraid of women--and of being a woman. Forced into the role of a boy (not a man), Athena tends to take the side of the males when conflicts arise and She is usually harsher on females than males. It's a side of Her I often find hard to reconcile with my feelings about Her because, especially in Neo-Wicca and Eclecticism, Athena seems to be the epitome of feminism. And She's not.

Peaches - Boys Wanna Be Her

Alright, ignore the video, please. I chose this song to round off my mix-tape with this song by Peaches mostly as a continuation of the point raised at the previous video; that Athena seems to be, for many, the most awesome of the Gods and Goddesses. She's wise, strong, confident, gets on with the boys and she's independent. This song speaks to that part of her persona and I adore it because of that.

So this is it, my mix-tape to Athena. Are there songs you disagree with or do you have your own to add? I'd love to hear it.
